On the grounds of the former Taichung Airport, the city government is planning a growth zone with 5 districts with different profiles (financial, technological, residential, and cultural). To start developing this large area of land has been proposed an international competition for the Taichung Gateway Park, which would convert it into the great “lung” of the complex and would become the great piece that structures and connects it pedestrianly.
Functional program
The proposal seeks to give top priority to green by giving it continuity to the “detriment” of the roads that pass underneath. A large plant mass where water and tree areas take center stage and become the prelude to the 3 sets of public buildings that are part of the program, the Taichung City Cultural Center, the Taichung Movie City, and the brand-new Taiwan Tower that with Its 300 m will become the new landmark of the city. In this way, sustainability, urban planning, and architecture interact in a balanced way in an extensive surface of wild forests on which a large activity park aims to become the new paradigm of the city.
Opportunities
Various analysis has led to structuring the current program of the project on a vehicular and pedestrian network that jointly articulates the city’s districts, the green areas, and lakes derived from Gateway Park on a series of platforms that are directly associated with recreational and sports activities. Bringing 5 districts together in a great green lung for the city, a corridor park on which the technological, financial, residential, and cultural sectors are fragmented, along with a large vegetal extension that will be the main artery of the city is an enclave in which the presence of three emblematic public buildings stands out, the most important, The Taiwan Tower.
