Do you imagine changing the port into an urban park with a lake in the middle? A park that can be enjoyed by the
inhabitants of Ciutat Vella, Poble Sec, the Raval, or Barceloneta? A park that connects Montjuic, Ciutadella, and the
beaches? A park to take a walk, to run, to practice sports, a park with beaches to swim and islands to practice surf or
canoe? A space full of leisure, culture, biodiversity, and relaxation where the water baths the perimeter.
Then, welcome to “Parc Blau” by ON-A.
The port of Barcelona is an infrastructure that, over its history, has only faced the sea and it has served what came and left here. But, thanks to the expansion of the Port of Barcelona to the logistic zone, a possibility to the Port Vell was opened and it might face the city and be enjoyed by the citizens.
Now we have two ports, the logistic one and Port Vell or Port Ciutat with completely different characteristics:
We believe that this space, the Port Ciutat, has the potential for becoming a zone for the inhabitants, it could be a park that decongests the surrounding neighborhoods such as Ciutat Vella, the Raval, Paral·lel, or the Barceloneta.
Analyzing Ciutat Vella with the information from the Open Data, it is possible to see that this district has a population of more than 104,507 inhabitants with only 74 Ha of green areas and 10,760 trees, that is a ratio of 0.10 trees and 7m2 of green per inhabitant. According to the WHO, the minimum values for a correct quality of life would be 0.33 trees/inhabitant and 10-15 m2 of green areas/inhabitant.
Nevertheless, the setting of Paseo Columbus and the port perimeter are big architectonic barriers and around 80% of this space is inaccessible. This is a hermetic space, and it has low participation from the inhabitants.
We believe that this is the moment for the city and the port to talk, it is necessary to go further from the electoral periods and focus on transforming these spaces into something more enjoyable for all the citizens from Barcelona.
We propose some strategies such as breaking the perimeter line that has a port logistic with a more human scale, one that is more accessible and that allows leisure, cultural and restoration activities.
Then, to create a walk that connects all this perimeter and picks up all the flux from all the neighborhoods.
This new drawing will allow to connect the park of Montjuic with Ciutadella and it will also generate a new green lung in the coastline of Barcelona.
A new park with a big lake in the middle, as we like to say. A surgery similar to the one that the city lived in 1992, where it recovered the coastline and more than 10 km of beaches. Now, we could do this successful change again and conquer this almost 10 km of perimeter, thus Barcelona will be transformed into a city even more attractive because it has this lamina of water to its citizens.
This is Parc Blau by ON-A, a new park to XXI century.
